PLANET OF THE APES

1968-
-ADVANCEMENT IN SOCIETY
CURRENT ISSUES
-MODERN TECHNOLOGY
-HOW AUDIENCES HAVE EVOLVED
WHAT EXCITES THEM?
-STORYLINE
-MARKETING

Makeup advancement, expectation ahead of its time. 1960s released less hollwood movies that’s the previous 50yrs. Averaging at 1.6mill. planet of the apes big production. Rated a G equivalent to a PG.

The 1960’s was a low point in hollywood, its showed strain keeping up with society, and made significantly less movies then each decade had in the previous 50 years. But planet of the apes made a monumental impact along with films such as ‘2001: A space oddesy’ recovering hollywoods reputation. Planet of the apes was groundbreaking mostly for its makeup, audiences where not used to seeing something so advanced for its time. Putting an instant expectation on the other films to bring something else ahead of its time. But, the next two films did not impress enough, stopping the film sequels for 30 years. At this time budgets for Hollywood films were low, averaging at about 1.6 million, but planet of the apes had a huge budget of 5.8million, It was a pre determined hit.
This is one of the original posters designed to market planet of the apes. Being that this picture was aimed at a wide audience young to old, male female, anyone who took an interest in science fiction.  You can see how the poster has included different marketing strategies to attract different audiences. The images, the good-looking hero, aimed at women. The beautiful damsel, aimed at men. The apes, aimed at science fiction nerds, there is something for everyone! Despite the obvious change in graphics and style, the techiniues to attract a wider audience is the same.

1970 Beneath the planet of the apes
1971 escape from the planet of the apes

Two remakes release within 3 years of the original, both with a very similar storyline, another set of astronauts arriving on a far future earth overrun by apes. So close to the original its obvious the 1968 hit made such an impact the next two films were made to profiteer from its success.  The budget was significantly less from the original along with the profit, the original grossed at 32 million in the US and the first prequal peaked at 17 million. Escape from the planet of the apes went even further down on budget and gross, the gross was nearly three times less than the original. Proving the similarity with the original was something which didn’t work. This clearly shows it needed at complete reboot, Tim Burton 30 years later took on completely rebooting it. Bringing back planet of the apes.
Budget- $3,000,000 (estimated)  Gross- $17,489,009 (USA)
Budget  $2,500,000 (estimated)  Gross  $12,300,000 (USA)

Soundtrack Pro

Today we experimented with soundtrack pro. Learning how to use the software and how effective sound effects are.
I created this using 'track motion'

After effects films

Films we learnt how to make in after effects.
In this lesson i learnt how to start a composition and arrange layers on it. This animation is simple, as it is only made of 3 layers, dancers (foreground), background, and a text layer. I learnt how to create compositions and insert layers into them, i also learnt about how to use 'nesting'. I added a radical blur effect to the dancers and after adding this effect I chose zoom from the type menu and then in the composition panel moved the center point of the blue lower by selecting and dragging the 'cross hair' to the center. Then to make this layer brighter I added the 'exposure' effect, and dragged it into color correction,

To create this I first imported the image dragged it onto a composition, made the clip 3 seconds, and made the image 'fit to comp' so it was the right size. I then imported the logo, dragged it into the timeline, I used the 'Horizontal Type tool' typed 'TRAVEL EUROPE' I changed the font size to 24, clicked the eyedropper and selected the rotated 'destinations' text on the logo to select the green colour. I then applied a drop shadow to the logo. The next step was applying the animation,  I went to the effects and presets panel select texts and then blur, I then dragged the bullet train animation onto the travel Europe layer in the timeline panel. I used pre compositions to sync the layers together.

This animation is made up of shape layers, to create the shapes you select the rectangle tool. Cover the composition with the rectangle tool. I then applied the gradient tool to give the light at the bottom affect. I then selected the polygon shape and altered the shape by adjusting the outer roundness. I then selected twist and changed the angle to 160 and repeated the shape and adjusted the scale so the shapes went across the screen, then blended the shapes into the background. I then used the star tool and duplicated the shape. I then added the DJ.mov as the front layer and added the cartoon effect.

Camera Blocking

Camera blocking is directing either your actors or props in accordance to camera movement. It creates a more fluid transition from each composition and shifts focus or importance between characters.

Test shooting-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLe4lg6ntgo

Today we experimented with different shots using a single camera/ By doing practice shoots we can pre determine which shots work and why. We found over shoulder shots work well, and if the character being shot from behind turns towards the camera it creates a great shift in focus from one character to another.
