Ident Evaluation

I used after effects to create my ident, with a basic level of animation. When the letters fell I wanted the girl to appear like she was watching them. I did this by  adjusting the scale, and tried to make it look as accurate as possible. To adjust the scale I set a keyframe 'in' and 'out' at the start and end of where I want the letters to move.

I imported the letters by using 'text' in after effects, and adjusted the colour on them, to make them multi-coloured. So that they fell down at the right moment I dragged the sequences along the timeline.

I think that my ident looked creative, and gave across a fun 80s vibe, which is what I was going for; since my channel is aimed mostly at adolescents. I wanted my character to look bright and funky, to go with the animation I was going to put in. I think my ident is individual since I am not solely using moving image and motion graphics but a combination of the two together. This created an interesting and pleasing visual.

Ident pre-production/planning

 Ident pre-production/Research

I want my ident to be a representation of our productions, our style, look. Since our films are very experimental and creative, I wanted my ident to express this. Our work is all about visual experimentation, our goal is to push the bounds of 'normal' and create something new and quirky for our audiences. Therefore out work is mainly aimed at a young target audience, mainly new film-makers like ourselves, who are interested in using new techniques in there work. I used bright fun colours to represent this.

You could compare the ideas behind my ident with the ones had behind E4s ident's.
E4 always has animated, fun, silly ident's. This one was set in a lounge, which in, 4 trees had grown, the sofa was sinking along with a chair, mushrooms were growing from the ground, and two sheep stood in the corner, completely bizarre and comical! Which suits the channels programme since alot of them are comedy's. Aiming its channel at the younger viewers, being that its programs generally are targeted at adolescents. The animations are very artistic and eye-catching. Using an experimental stand out design does appeal to adolescents, the same as what we are aiming to do in our ident. Most idents identify themselves through the use of colour, by connecting the viewers with a colour identifies their channel. And is a strong branding technique, E4 uses purple. But my ident has a mix match look, our logo, is created from different fonts and colours. Branding ourselves by our unique approach on this. I think that our logo represents us, and shows our style. The ident is 3D, The animation I plan to use on my ident will only be 2D meaning I will only be using an X and Y axis.

I first imported my footage, of a girl spinning then watching the letters as they fall to create the word 'PALM'. I first added my clip to a new composition, then added text, I made the text fall by using 'position' on my letters, creating a start and end point on the timeline. And perfected them using 'scale'. I think that putting animation and footage together creates an interesting look, which will attract my target audience, being like minded adolescents, who enjoy creative and or experimental programmes.

Channel 4 identifies themselves by a collage of idents which each use the number 4, connecting objects to create it. The objects float into place to create the number, experts used hightech graphics to create this. This sketch is of haystacks on a field coming into the shape of a four. The series of idents all have extremely different settings including international destinations, representing the fact of the channels versatility. It appeals to its audience since it has been so cleverly made, and seem impossible to achieve to anybody who doesn't work with CGI. This ident has no clear target audience, purposely since channel 4 shows such programmes which could appeal to a huge audience. And has no specific target age group unlike e4.They would have used point tracking to import the '4' and every case of this sequence of idents.
One of my personal favourite idents is JJ Abraham's company 'bad robot'. I think it has a unique style, and catchy look. The perky ident is a small red robot which waddles across your screen whilst 'bad robot' is said in a robot voice. Although you would instantly associate this kind of animation with children the dark colours, and unattractive looking red robot aims its audience higher. With a grey gloomy background it associated itself with the programmes this company owns like 'lost' a programme which is very dark. The ident is 2d, and even appears like its been sketched, its simple yet effective.

Runaway Soundtrack Planning

Since we aren't using dialogue our sound is extra important. We are using soundtrack Pro to create our diagetic sounds e.g. rain, rustling, footsteps. Soundtrack Pro has many foley created sounds which are non-copyright.

We have a piece of music which we felt matched the tone our our film perfectly:

Sigur Ros- Untitled 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LKMfKNl_mc

This piece of music doesn't include singing and is mainly ambient sounds, which we liked, since we aren't using dialogue we didn't want it to appear like a music video.

We used Sound to perfect the video, by including a sound as small as a door closing, can make the difference between a professional looking video and a student one.

Sounds such as this we needed were:

-Door Closing-Footsteps-Heartbeat-Breathing -Coughing

Although we took the sound from SoundtrackPro we did need to make some changes during editing of FinalCut, we had to lower and heighten levels when put onto the footage.

SHOOT UPDATES

In telephone box.Actors: Molly NobleOverview:We was precautious about the weather in the Shelter in old leigh since it was raining but ended up using the weather to our advantage. And managed to get some quality shots in which the rain emphasised the mood and tone we were going for.

13/11/13 2nd shootLocation: Eastern Esplanade, Southend-on-SeaScene: Girl is walking along the seafrontActors: Molly NobleLocation: Eastern Esplanade, Southend-on-SeaScene: Girl and drunk man meet along the seafront and he takes her homeActors: Molly Noble, Jay Willoughby Location: Southend Sea Front, Southend-on-SeaScene: Girl is asleep on bench and a hooded man steals her guitar Actors: Molly Noble, Liam Meade Overview: The scene along the seafront went better than we anticipated, we bought portable lights but ended up using the casino lights as a source since it was more effective and looked more realistic.

27/11/13 - 3rd shootLocation: Sea Front, Southend-on-SeaScene: Girl wakes up to discover guitar is missingActors: Molly NobleLocation: Southend Pier, Southend-on-SeaScene: Girl wakes up, cold and lonely under the pier.Actors: Molly NobleLocation: Southend High Street, Southend-on-SeaScene: BuskingActors: Molly NobleOverview: the only problem we had with this shoot was the amount of people walking in front of the camera during the busking scene under the bridge. Apart from this we was very pleased with the amount of usable footage we got on this shoot.

12/12/13 - Fourth shoot
Location: Lonach, Chestnut Farm Drive, Althorne
Scene: Argument with mum
Actors: Molly Noble, Dawn Lister
Location: Lonach, Chestnut Farm Drive, Althorne
Scene: Girl packing bag
Actors: Molly Noble
Location: Station Hill, Althorne
Scene: Walking and trying to hitch hike
Actors: Molly Noble

Overview: For this shoot we used a different camera, we used a Canon DSLR 600D, this was different to using our sony and canon camcorders. We really preferred this camera, it gave a better more professional look and was easier to use. We got a more steady shot because it was smaller and it is also easier to transport. It is also simpler to edit the footage because you can just import it rather than log and capturing it. We feel we had a better shoot than previous days because of the camera and that we her happier with the footage we shot, we would definitely use this camera again. Most of our scenes on this shot were also inside which made lighting, sound and any previous weather problems we had easier to solve.

Proposal, Single Camera, Runaway

Proposal
Our short film is a story of a girl who runs away from home, showing what she is faced with when leaving home and taking to the streets. Our film approaches different issues people are faced with when living on the streets, and we show each of these issues in different scenes. Separated like chapters, we made a list of issues we wanted to approach being; anger, neglection, desperation, shame, hunger, greed, isolation, determination, hopelessness and exhaustion.
We wanted to translate her emotion through using subtitles, and completely removing all dialogue. Her thoughts and feelings will be explained through on screen text as the film progresses. We will still be using diegetic sound, created through foley, soundtrack pro and using the microphone on set. We are taking an artistic risk by eliminating dialogue but we believe it will create a more personal and honest connection with the character and audience.
We are targeting our film at mainly adolescents, since we want our film to create awareness of the struggles which comes from leaving home. We also think the editing techniques and filming we’ve used will appeal to aspiring filmmakers like ourselves. Since it is very experimental, artistic, and abstract.
We think if we were to sell our programme to a channel its would be E4. Since our target audience is a very similar range to theirs. And our film does have similarity to the issues approached in some of their programmes for example skins.
We plan to market our short film by creating posters, which we will place around colleges, schools, bus stops accessible locations for our target audience, being adolescents. We also want to create a viral marketing campaign, pop ups which will appear on popular sites such as facebook, twitter and youtube, commonly used by our main target audience. We also want to appeal to have our viral campaign on websites such as ‘grolsch film works’ a website which celebrates creative film.

PLANET OF THE APES

1968-
-ADVANCEMENT IN SOCIETY
CURRENT ISSUES
-MODERN TECHNOLOGY
-HOW AUDIENCES HAVE EVOLVED
WHAT EXCITES THEM?
-STORYLINE
-MARKETING

Makeup advancement, expectation ahead of its time. 1960s released less hollwood movies that’s the previous 50yrs. Averaging at 1.6mill. planet of the apes big production. Rated a G equivalent to a PG.

The 1960’s was a low point in hollywood, its showed strain keeping up with society, and made significantly less movies then each decade had in the previous 50 years. But planet of the apes made a monumental impact along with films such as ‘2001: A space oddesy’ recovering hollywoods reputation. Planet of the apes was groundbreaking mostly for its makeup, audiences where not used to seeing something so advanced for its time. Putting an instant expectation on the other films to bring something else ahead of its time. But, the next two films did not impress enough, stopping the film sequels for 30 years. At this time budgets for Hollywood films were low, averaging at about 1.6 million, but planet of the apes had a huge budget of 5.8million, It was a pre determined hit.
This is one of the original posters designed to market planet of the apes. Being that this picture was aimed at a wide audience young to old, male female, anyone who took an interest in science fiction.  You can see how the poster has included different marketing strategies to attract different audiences. The images, the good-looking hero, aimed at women. The beautiful damsel, aimed at men. The apes, aimed at science fiction nerds, there is something for everyone! Despite the obvious change in graphics and style, the techiniues to attract a wider audience is the same.

1970 Beneath the planet of the apes
1971 escape from the planet of the apes

Two remakes release within 3 years of the original, both with a very similar storyline, another set of astronauts arriving on a far future earth overrun by apes. So close to the original its obvious the 1968 hit made such an impact the next two films were made to profiteer from its success.  The budget was significantly less from the original along with the profit, the original grossed at 32 million in the US and the first prequal peaked at 17 million. Escape from the planet of the apes went even further down on budget and gross, the gross was nearly three times less than the original. Proving the similarity with the original was something which didn’t work. This clearly shows it needed at complete reboot, Tim Burton 30 years later took on completely rebooting it. Bringing back planet of the apes.
Budget- $3,000,000 (estimated)  Gross- $17,489,009 (USA)
Budget  $2,500,000 (estimated)  Gross  $12,300,000 (USA)
